Arabic

Arabic is a major and minor that prepare you to communicate effectively in one of the world’s most influential languages while deepening your understanding of the people and cultures of the Arabic-speaking world. Through progressive language study, you will build oral and written proficiency and explore the rich literary, cultural, and historical traditions of Arabic societies from the Arabian Peninsula across North Africa.

Whether your interests lie in language and linguistics, literature and media, international business and diplomacy, or global affairs, proficiency in Arabic opens doors to careers in education, government, international development, journalism, translation and interpretation, and more.

To complete the major, students take foundational language sequences, advanced language courses, literature and culture classes, and electives chosen with an academic advisor to reflect individual goals and interests. The minor provides a concentrated path through key language and cultural courses that support both Arabic study and other fields.

Students are encouraged to begin Arabic study early and to consider study-abroad opportunities to enhance language acquisition and cultural immersion.

Changes to the requirements for fulfilling the Arabic Major and Minor will go into effect at the start of the 2019/2020 Academic Year. Students who entered OSU prior to the Autumn 2019 semester can choose to fulfill either the old or the new program requirements, in consultation with the NESA Academic Advisor. Students who enroll during or after the Autumn 2019 semester will be required to fulfill the new program requirements.
