Contributions to this fund are used as needed for support in the department of Department of Near Eastern and South Asian Languages & Cultures.
Arabic Program
The M.S. Sofia Chair in Arabic Studies Fund [fund no. 606814]
Established June 1, 1990 with gifts from Zuheir Sofia. Used to support a distinguished scholar who will develop a greater understanding and awareness of Arabic language, culture, heritage, and literature and disseminate such knowledge in both the academy and the community.
The Arabic Studies Fellowship Fund [fund no. 313510]
Provide support to graduate students working with the M.S. Sofia Chair in Arabic Studies.
Arabic Studies Discretionary Fund [fund no. 307509]
To promote and develop the study of Arabic language, literature, and linguistics.
The Hajj Abu Ismail Jallaq Scholarship Fund [fund no. 315370]
Provide support to undergraduate students majoring in Islamic Studies and graduate students researching Islam.
Hebrew Program
Diane M. Cummins Scholarship Fund [fund no. 601513]
Established February 1, 1985 by Diane Cummins. Income provides a scholarship in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures to benefit those studying Hebrew and/or Yiddish.
Ellen E. and Victor J. Cohn Study Abroad Scholarship Fund [fund no. 601353]
Established September 22, 2004 by the Cohns. Income provides support to students studying abroad at Hebrew University, Israel.
Hebrew Language and Literature Fund [fund no. 303446]
To promote and develop the study of Hebrew language and literature.
Turkish Program
Turkish Studies Fund [fund no. 306943]
To promote and develop the study of Turkish language and literature.
Professorship Fund in Ottoman and Turkish History [fund no. 665546]
Established April 3, 2009 with gifts from an anonymous donor; supports a professorship position in Ottoman and Turkish studies and provides research support funding for graduate students in the same field.
The Adivar Fellowship Fund for Study of Ottoman and Turkish History [fund no. 640027]
Established November 2, 2001 with gifts from an anonymous donor. Income provides a fellowship to recruit or retain a graduate student in Ottoman and Turkish History.
The Sydney N. Fisher Memorial Fund in Ottoman and Turkish Studies [fund no. 642225]
Established March 2, 2001 established in memory of Sydney N. Fisher by his widow Elizabeth S. Fisher and children, Alan W., Robert Lynn, and Margaret Fisher McCarthy. Income is used to enhance the excellence of Ottoman and Turkish studies by aiding scholars with preference to historians.
