The NELC Department is pleased to welcome Dr. Sarah Schellinger to the Department as a Visiting Scholar for the 2019-2020 academic year. She specializes in the art and archaeology of ancient Egypt and Nubia. She earned her PhD (2017) in Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations from the University of Toronto, an MA (2008) in Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations from the University of Toronto, an MA (2007) in art history from the Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology at the University of Memphis, and a BA (2005) in anthropology from The Ohio State University.
For the Spring 2020 Semester, Dr. Schellinger will teach the special topics course, NELC 2194:
ANCIENT EGYPT IN ITS CULTURAL CONTEXT
Ancient Egypt in its Cultural Context is a thematically presented introduction to major aspects of ancient Egyptian civilization. During the semester we will identify the basic structure of ancient Egyptian society and culture by placing special emphasis on the interaction of economics, social organization, environment, law, politics, and religion. Some of the specific topics that will be covered include Language and Writing, Craft Specialization, Women, Science and Medicine, and Affairs and Scandals. The course will conclude with a consideration of Egyptomania, the modern fascination with ancient Egyptian culture.
