Safaitic is the name of an extinct script used to write rock inscriptions in forms of pre-Islamic Arabic concentrated the Syro-Jordanian Ḥarrah. Ahmad Al-Jallad with his colleague Karolina Jaworska (Poland) have recently published the first dictionary of this extinct language. The volume contains more than 1500 words with extensive notes justifying the interpretation of the vocabulary and drawing parallels with other ancient Semitic languages. The dictionary provides our earliest view of the Arabic lexicon, many centuries before the emergence of Arabic lexicography in the Abbasid period.
