The beginning of the autumn 2018 semester marks the start of three new graduate student careers at NELC. The department is very excited to welcome these three talented scholars to the NELC community and looks forward to helping each accomplish their individual goals. If you see Ben, Donna, or Philip in the hallways of Hagerty Hall, please greet them and welcome them to OSU!

Benjamin Batarseh is a MA student studying Arabic language and cultures. He completed his Bachelors degree in International Politics at Georgetown University and has a special interest in the Arabic-speaking world and the Levant. His study abroad experience in Nizwa, Oman grew his interest in the region’s language and politics and has led him to consider a career in a related field. 

Donna Jarjour is a student in the NELC doctoral program studying the Hebrew Bible in its ancient Near Eastern context. She earned her M.A. in Biblical Studies from Reformed Theological Seminary. Her research interests include comparing the laws of ancient Israel with those of antecedent and contemporaneous ancient Near Eastern nations. 

Philip Tice is a doctoral student focusing on Arabic Language and Literature. Philip has advanced training and proficiency in Spanish language as well as Arabic, having earned his BA in Linguistics from BYU before earning his M.A. in Intelligence Studies at American Public University. He has an extensive background with cross-cultural engagements in military education, training and operations.
