Spring 2019 NELC/Humanities Scholars Lecture Series
Each semester, the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, in partnership with the OSU Humanities Scholars Program, hosts a lecture series on topics of broad interest to students and the OSU community. The Spring 2019 Lecture Series will include talks scheduled for March 20, April 2, and April 4.
The Bible now appears comfortably in English in a 21st century society that aims for equality and where not everyone believes in God. On the other hand, the Bible was written in a culture where everyone believed in the gods and where everyone recognized distinct protocols for coming in contact with one's superiors. Most Bible translations deliberately obscure this protocol for encountering the divine, making it easy for contemporary readers to feel far more comfortable than was intended by those who wrote the text.
