
Join us for the screening and discussion of The Healer (2018), an ethnographic film by Aban Saberi. Ehsan Estiri from the department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures will present the film and lead a discussion after the screening.
About the film: This ethnographic film centers around folk healing practices in rural areas of Eastern Iran, mostly performed by women. Presenting some of these practices through interviews with their female practitioners, The Healer explores the environment, beliefs, gender dynamics and the ways people of the region understand and interact with human bodies.
About the discussant: Ehsan Estiri is a documentary filmmaker, cultural anthropologist, and PhD candidate in the department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures. His areas of specialization include anthropology of the Middle East, Folk Studies, and Media Studies, and he teaches The Middle East and the Media and Films of the Middle East at OSU.
The event is part of the Center for Folklore Studies Ethnographic Film Series, and is co-sponsored by the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures.
The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
