Dr. James McDougall is Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Oxford University. He is an expert on the history of Algerian nationalism in the long struggle against 130 years of French colonialism, as well as the more recent impact of the Arab Spring and the influence of Arab culture in Africa. His books include A History of Algeria (2017) and History and the Culture of Nationalism (2009), and he recently published "Security, Sociology, and the Contemporary History of Islam" in the journal Annales. His talk is co-sponsored by the Department of French and Italian.
