Let's Talk Turkey: Contemporary Politics in a Country Between East and West  - Dr. Danielle Schoon - Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures

Turkey is a country with a rich history and culture. It is a member of NATO and candidate for the Europe Union, a strategic ally of the United States, and a cultural bridge between Europe and the Middle East. Yet, the daily news headlines tell other stories:

A failed coup attempt... The murder of a Saudi journalist in the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul... War in Syria, a flood of refugees, conflict on the border, and disputes over the role of the Kurds... A failing economy, an authoritarian leader, and questions over Turkey's increasing cooperation with Russia and China... The mass arrest of journalists and academics, a brain drain as intellectuals flee Turkey... An Islamist political party in power... Questions about the future of democracy in Turkey...

This talk will address recent events in this region and why we should care about contemporary issues in Turkey.
