Humanities Scholars Lecture Series: Iran: Modern Response to an Islamic Past-Oriented Culture

Women in Iran
October 23, 2018
5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Ramseyer Hall room 100

Persian lecturer Mehrak Kamali will discuss contemporary Iranian society and provide some context for understanding recent social movements in Iran.

Why Iran is in the first page of media every day?  What is the challenge of Iran? Does the Islamic Government of Iran represent Iranians as a modern nation? The last forty years of Iran’s history is the history of Iranians’ resistance against the dominant past-oriented Islamic culture. The resistance against the Islamic Republic of Iran has led to a number of social movements such as Reformism (1997-2005), Green Movement (2009-2011), and Iranian women’s and workers’ movements. This talk discusses Iranians’ resistance as their modernist and secular response to the past-oriented culture of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
