Hans Utter and Hakan Kaya - Ottoman Music event
This program will present a historical and musical overview of the maqam system as found in the Ottoman Empire and the Middle East. The aspects of rhythmic cycles (tarab), improvisation, and song forms will be discussed and demonstrated, as well as the connections of rhythm and melody to various dance forms.Hans Utter holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology. He performs regularly in the U.S., India, and Europe, and is the recipient of 16 national and international awards and grants, including the Louis Armstrong Outstanding Musician award. He was recently appointed as an Ohio Arts Council Artist in Residence. As a bandleader, his projects include Mood Swing, MLQ, Utter Space, and the Hans Utter Trio. His recent releases include Pure Land (2012) with his group Chakra and Morning and Evening Mediations (2013) featuring Steve Gorn. His compositions have been featured on National Public Radio, ABC, Tajik National Radio, and several Indian networks. He has performed and recorded with artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Jim Hall, John Abercrombie, Public Enemy Dr. Dre, Latif Bolat, Kalyan Pathak, Ravish Mohan, Steve Gorn andMoussa Dieng Kala. He has lectured and: conducted workshops throughout the world and is currently writing a biography of the legendary sitarist, Ustad Vilayat Khan. He has taught music at OSU, Capital, and Indria Gandhi National Open. Hakan Kaya hails from Konya, Turkey, and has been performing music since childhood. He has studied and performed with numerous masters of Turkish and Middle Eastern music, including Latif Bolat, Muhtesem, and Turkana.
