Each semester, the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, in partnership with the OSU Humanities Scholars Program, hosts a lecture series on topics of broad interest to students and the OSU community. Courtiers and Courtesans, Princesses and Prostitutes: the Forgotten Women of Medieval Persian Poetry with Dr. Dick Davis

Look in any anthology of "classical" (i.e. medieval) Persian poetry and  you would be lucky to find more than two women poets listed, and it's always the same two. But in reality there were fine women poets writing in Persian in virtually every generation from the 10th century on; this talk will examine the work of four of these poets and the extraordinary range of their poetry (witty, feisty, bawdy, plaintive, grieving, angry, contemptuous …).
