The safety of our community is our top priority. We have decided to cancel all of our Spring lectures and non-academic programs on the advice of University officials and public health experts. We hope to reschedule this lecture when normal campus operations resume.
Nothing Remains: Exploring the End of the Islamic State in Mosul Through Photography with Bradley Brincka
The spectacular brutality of the Islamic State (IS) captivated popular imagination after the group’s declaration of a caliphate in 2014 and its subsequent expansion and international attacks. Much less attention has been paid to how IS conceived of itself: how did it view its own place in history and what sort of society did it seek to establish? Drawing entirely on personal photography from the campaign to liberate Mosul in 2017, this talk will thematically explore the final days of IS rule and its immediate aftermath, giving particular attention to graffiti, literary output, iconoclasm, heritage destruction, and the group's international character. The experiences of Iraqi soldiers, civilians, and even animals during the city's liberation will also be explored.
From January to June 2017, Bradley Brincka worked as a volunteer ambulance driver in Mosul Iraq with a medical NGO (The Free Burma Rangers) and the Iraqi Army.
