Each semester, the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, in partnership with the OSU Humanities Scholars Program, hosts a lecture series on topics of broad interest to students and the OSU community. The Autumn 2019 Lecture Series will include talks scheduled for October 16, 23, and 29.
The Book of Jonah and Its Interpreters with Dr. Daniel Frank
One of the strangest books of the Bible, Jonah presents several anomalies: a rebellious prophet seeking to escape a divine commission; a shipful of pious, non-Israelite sailors; a city of repentant Assyrians; a miraculous, shady plant; and, of course, that big fish. Struggling with this story over the centuries, Jews and Christians have developed interpretations even more fantastic than the original. This lecture will explore Jonah and its significance in antiquity and the Middle Ages.
