Zilola Khalilova is a historian of Central Asia and a Senior Research Fellow at the Center of Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan. Her research focuses on Islamic education, religious knowledge, and Muslim intellectual and social life in late imperial and early Soviet Central Asia. She is currently a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at The Ohio State University.
This talk explores the changing forms of Islamic education and the transmission of religious knowledge in Soviet Central Asia. Drawing on archival materials, petitions, educational texts, oral histories, and other sources, the talk traces how Muslims navigated changing political and social conditions across the Soviet period and how religious knowledge continued to circulate through both formal and informal forms of education.
